But sometimes nothing beats the simplicity and versatility of a plain dumpling. The perfect pair for chicken or another meat when you’re in the mood for comfort food, this dumpling is a piece of biscuit-like dough that is cooked in liquid such as broth or soup. Soaking up the flavors of the liquid, these petite little dough balls can pack outsized delight into a small package. Follow along with these simple steps and you’ll soon be armed with the knowledge of how to make dumplings for everyone around the table to enjoy to the final bite.

To make dumplings, prepare dumpling dough as directed in one of our delicious recipes, or try this simple dumpling recipe:

  1. Stir 1 cup all-purpose baking mix, 1/4 cup BREAKSTONE'S or KNUDSEN Sour Cream and 1/4 cup milk just until baking mix is moistened. Form the mixture into 6 small mounds. Meanwhile, heat your cooking liquid of choice, whether that’s chicken soup, vegetable broth, stew or otherwise.
  2. Spoon 6 mounds into simmering liquid and cook on medium-high heat for 2 minutes.
  3. Cover the pot, reduce the heat to low and cook for 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in dumplings comes out clean. If you make smaller dumplings, reduce cooking time as needed.

Once your dumplings are ready, serve them with your comfort food of choice for a down-home, cozy meal.
