How to Poach an Egg on the Stove

  • Fill a medium saucepan about 2/3 full with water and bring to a boil.
  • Turn the heat down to a simmer. You should see bubbles coming up to the surface, but it shouldn't be a rolling boil.
  • Crack an egg into a small measuring cup, preferably one with a long handle. This will help you ease the egg into the water.
  • Add 2 teaspoons HEINZ Distilled White Vinegar to the water. This step is optional, but many people like to add vinegar to the boiling water because it helps the egg white cohere to itself and cook into a more compact shape. The vinegar taste is not noticeable in the finished egg.
  • Use the measuring cup to carefully lower the egg into the water, egg white first, while making sure the water is still at a simmer.
  • Cook for 4 minutes if you like your egg cooked with a firm white and liquid yolk center. The final cooking time for a poached egg is up to you, and it depends on how well you like your eggs done so adjust the time accordingly. With a little practice, you'll know just how to poach an egg to your liking.
  • Remove the egg with a slotted spoon and dry it with a paper towel to keep the cooking water from soaking your other foods. Serve the egg while it's still hot. Season with salt and pepper, if desired, and enjoy!

How to Poach Multiple Eggs

If you want to poach multiple eggs at once, make sure your pan is big enough to accommodate all your eggs without crowding them. If necessary, poach the eggs in batches. Crack each egg into its own measuring cup before you start and slip them into the water one after the next. Add an extra 30 seconds or so to the cooking time for each additional egg, but otherwise follow the same steps as above.
