  • Heat oven to 350°F.
  • Melt 1/2 cup butter; pour into large mixer bowl. Add cake mix, pineapple, coconut and eggs; beat until blended. Stir in 1/2 cup nuts.
  • Pour into 13x9-inch pan sprayed with cooking spray.
  • Bake 25 to 30 min. or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool.
  • Beat cream cheese, sugar and remaining butter in medium bowl with mixer until blended; spread onto cake. Sprinkle with remaining nuts.

Traditionally a preacher's cake has a dense texture resembling that of a crumb cake. If you prefer a cake with a fluffier, more traditional, cake texture, prepare cake batter as directed, using 3 eggs and adding 3/4 cup water to the batter before pouring into prepared pan and baking as directed.

Adjusting Bake Temperatures for Cookware

The type of baking dish you use can affect your results. Dark coated metal pans conduct heat more efficiently than uncoated metal or glass pans, which can result in overbrowning or even burning. If using a coated metal pan, reduce the baking temperature by 25°F to combat this.


Prepare using a yellow cake mix, and adding 2 tsp. ground cinnamon to cake batter before pouring into prepared pan and baking as directed.
